Public domain. Δρ.

Sustainability and Policy

There's something that drives me to work for the public good. It's not that I don't have private desires for a larger and more comfortable home, a better bike, or more money to travel all over the world, especially travel and discover all about Hellas, my home. In fact, I have even dreamt I would like to create a center for Hellenic studies to make Hellenic wisdom and knowledge available to all for the betterment of the world. The problem is that humans, especially the business class, are wrecking the planet, Aristotle's natural world that does nothing in vain. So, at this stage, I keep writing and hoping other fellow human beings agree Mother Earth must be saved from the human savages mining and industrializing the land, converting life to a factory. Agriculture is the beginning of that struggle: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=GPsxHU0UOD8&lc=UgxtqpdopQiFa BRsDw14AaABAg

Tourism in Greece: From Heavy Industry to Prosperous Hospitality and Love of the Natural World

Olive trees, shipping, and tourism in Greece. Wikipedia. Tourism and pestilence against nature   Tourism is the heavy industry of Greece. It annually earns a fourth of the country’s income. The pestilence year 2020, however, was bad for  Greek tourism . In 2020, some 70 percent fewer tourists visited the country. This drastic decline meant less money for debt trapped Greece. Compared to 2019,  tourist receipts in 2020 dropped by 78.2 percent .    Greece was not alone in losing tourism in 2020. Tourism declined dramatically everywhere. That decline had “a  profound effect  around the world.”   Less international travel was beneficial to air quality and climate change. Global warming gas emissions declined by about seven percent. Experts say that kind of decline,  7.6 percent  in greenhouse gas emissions, would be necessary every year for ten years to stabilize global temperature to about 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the temperature in ...

Partisan Politics

The Republican war against America   The Biden administration is becoming an Obama administration. The Republican Senators and Republican members of the US House of Representatives are fighting Biden exactly like they fought Obama: opposing his initiatives and planning to turn their Supreme Court and the hundreds of federal judges they put in office during the Trump era against him.    Economic and theological origins of partisan politics   The Republican politicians’ hatred for their Democratic colleagues is a product of decades-long TV and radio indoctrination funded by billionaires who like slavery-like conditions for the working class. These plutocrats thrive on the politics of division and corruption.    Why would they take climate change seriously, for example, when the burning of fossil fuels continues to make them the kings of the realm?    The second source of political partisanship and corruption has theological origins. The country has ...

Free Besieged

Hellas expiring at Mesologgi, 1825, by Eugene Delacroix, 1827, Museum of Fine Arts, Bordeaux. Public Domain. Nature of freedom   It’s not clear what freedom has become. So many claim it, but so few understand it. We probably connect this virtue to freedom of speech and absence of old-style free-slave despotism.   But how are we to explain freedom and the Republican Party and about 70 million Americans that elected Trump who tried burying democracy and freedom in this country?    What I can say with certainty is that freedom is becoming an endangered species. Oligarchy and tyranny, on the other hand, have found a fertile ground in an increasingly plutocratic America.    Unless Trump is brought to justice for the environmental and public health crimes of his administration, and for treason he committed for urging his followers to take over the government with the insurrection that took place on the Capitol, January 6, 2021, and unless the billionaire cl...
